What is it?

SlapOS is an operating system for Cloud Computing designed to solve the growing concerns of lack of Freedom, loss of Privacy and weak Resilience of Cloud Monopolies. SlapOS is designed as a practical alternative so that everyone can create his own Cloud Computing business, help one each other and compete efficiently with Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Salesforce in a matter of hours or days.

Distributed Cloud

SlapOS can leverage the resources of multiple, independent providers of Computing power in order to create a resilient Cloud. Servers can be located in data centers, in offices or even at home. All of them are interconnected by IPv6. Some servers are connected by IPv4, either to provide a gateway to the public Web or to provide a gateway to Corporate Intranets.

By combining independent providers of computing power,  independent  providers of electricity, of network, of storage, SlapOS is more resilient to natural disasters, political crisis, financial crisis, strikes or wars than traditional Cloud solutions managed by a single entity.

Universal Compatibility: "if you can buildout it, you can cloud it"

SlapOS uses community driven buildout technology and relies on the GNU project to provide universal compatibility for merely any operating system (Linux, BSD, MacOS, Windows, etc.), computer language (C, C++, Erlang, Java, JavaScript, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, etc.), any application server (Zope, JBoss, Glassfish, node.js powered, etc) or application container (Tomcat, ...), any NoSQL or SQL database and any frontend. Turning a software application into IaaS, PaaS or SaaS is just a matter of hours or minutes. And it is supported by easy learning materials.

Also, SlapOS is designed for cost conscious companies. A single SlapOS node can for example handle as much as 200 independent ERP databases running at the same time, about 10 times more than first generation Cloud technology based on virtual machines. Yet, it also supports virtual machines for compatibility with legacy software.

Billing for Free

SlapOS is not only a technical software for provisionning. SlapOS Master embeds a full ERP and online application store. Once you have SlapOS running, all the accounting, billing, customer registration and support are also available at no extra cost and are highly customizable.
